Funny conversation today between our boys
Philip (age 6): “There’s a girl who keeps following me around and saying I’m her boyfriend.  Tell me how to get rid of her” Oliver (age 8): “Tell her ‘You deserve somebody better than me’”

OliverSabet.com
My almost-8-yo son Oliver just started a blog (his idea) with my help.  Should be fun to look back on some day.  I like how his first ever blog post was talking smack.

Ipad 2 vs Xoom, cont'd
Two posts down, I discussed my difficulty in choosing between iPad 2 and Xoom.  Yesterday at the mall, I got a chance to spend 10 minutes with each. The iPad 2 feels very nice.  Like a big iPod Touch.  As thin as I expected from all the coverage.  The Xoom build also seems nice, but not as nice.  In particular, the Xoom feels chunky when holding in portrait mode, although it is tapered to feel...

The Myth of 'Starvation Mode'
I’ve started using MyFitnessPal and was intrigued by the suggestion by that app that very low caloric intake would induce something called “starvation mode”.  I’m familiar with much of the scientific evidence regarding various diets, and I’ve never encountered this particular term in the scientific literature. I Googled “starvation mode” and was astounded...

Struggling to decide: iPad 2 vs Xoom
I’ve set aside some money for a new tablet, and it’s come down to the $499 Wifi-only iPad 2 or the $599 Wifi-only Motorola Xoom.  Either way, I don’t need much memory, and I don’t need a data plan since I can tether via my Nexus S on T-Mobile. In favor of the iPad 2: Thinner, lighter, nicer build, slightly better battery life Lots more apps - Wife and kids would almost...

One of the Worst and Best Things About Android
One of the worst things about Android is that we are at the mercy of the manufacturers when it comes to updates for our operating system.  Lately Samsung and T-Mobile have come under fire for announcing a new Vibrant Plus running Froyo (2.2) while current Vibrant owners have been waiting a long, long time for this update. One of the best things about Android is that we are not at the mercy of the...

Google Search for Android
Those who are used to iOS will often have a first impression of Android which is skewed by the features they perceive as missing.  Some features are in fact missing, but more often they are present in a different and sometimes less intuitive form. For example, when I switched from an iPhone to an Android phone, I missed the ability to quickly get to the top of a web page by tapping on the top...

Professional Reviews of Kids Movies
There are certain things for which user reviews are much more useful than professional reviews.  Kids movies are one of those things. Example: Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me came out around the same time.  Just about every professional review for DM said that it was good but not as good as TS3.  As one reviewer put it, “Toy Story 3 is a masterpiece; Despicable Me is just decent...

Miui ROM for HTC Incredible
Miui is an Android Open Source Project ROM designed by a group in China.  It combines some of the features of iOS with the full functionality of Android and was made available as a ROM for rooted Nexus One and Desire users. Here’s a video showing off the ROM in action (video is sped up): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or-9T44Bt7M&feature=player_embedded Dai323 brought this ROM to the...

Tips for Good Battery Life with an HTC Incredible
Under Menu>Settings>Accounts & Sync: Disable sync for any apps you don’t need to stay synced in real-time.  I disabled sync for Flickr, News, Stocks, and Weather. Use the Power Control widget to control Wifi, GPS, and Bluetooth so those are easy to access and turn off when you aren’t using them.  Also makes it easy to change screen brightness on the fly. When possible,...
